Not sure about your level?

If you are a new learner at LALIA, we would like to make sure you are placed in the best group for your progress. In order to do so, a teacher from our school will have a short conversation with you.

Novice 2

Learners at this level communicate minimally by using a number of isolated words and memorized phrases.

Novice 3

This third consecutive month with LALIA is designed for learners who have taken Novice 2 with LALIA or completed an A1.2 course. Learners at this level pause frequently as they search for simple vocabulary or attempt to recycle their own and their interlocutor’s words.

Novice 4

This course is designed for learners who have taken Novice 3 with LALIA or acquired very basic conversation skills, comparable with A2.1 of the CEFR.
Conversation with speakers at this level is restricted to predictable topics necessary for survival. They respond to simple, direct questions or requests for information.

Novice 5

This last class of the novice level is designed for students who have taken Novice 4 with LALIA or reached a comparable level by other methods. Some learners in this class have completed an A2.2 course.
Conversation with learners at this level is restricted to concrete exchanges and predictable topics necessary for survival. The learners are primarily reactive and still struggle to answer direct questions, but they are able to ask a few appropriate questions. Their speech is characterized by frequent pauses, ineffective reformulations and self-corrections.
